Jeanne van Heeswijk is an artist who facilitates the creation of dynamic and diversified public spaces in order to “radicalize the local.” Her long-scale community-embedded projects question art’s autonomy by combining performative actions, discussions, and other forms of organizing and pedagogy in order to assist communities to take control of their own futures. She regularly lectures on topics such as urban renewal, participation and cultural production. Recent Projects include Philadelphia Assembled 2016 (ongoing) a collaborative endeavour with The Philadelphia Museum of Art and collaborators across the city. This three year project invited change agents throughout the city to collectively imagine a present and future Philadelphia. Philadelphia Assembled is organized around five ‘atmospheres of democracy’; Reconstructions, Sovereignty, Futures, Sanctuary, and Movement. Other notable projects include The Blue House 2005 and Homebaked 2010 (ongoing) commissioned by the Liverpool Biennial. Awards include: The inaugural Keith Haring Fellowship in Art and Activism at Bard College in 2014 and the Annenberg Prize for Art and Social Change, 2011.
